2/29/2020 11:08:05 AM 'Saudi Arabia on Thursday closed off the holiest sites in Islam to foreign pilgrims over the coronavirus, disrupting travel for thousands of Muslims already headed to the kingdom and potentially affecting plans later this year for millions more ahead of the fasting month of Ramadan and the annual hajj pilgrimage." japan has closed schools for a month I guess the Japanese and the arabs watch cnn and are dems also ! |

2/29/2020 1:57:13 PM This Flu vs Corona discussion seems to be missing a lot of relevant data. 1. I've been getting the CDC weekly Flu Surveillance reports for a few years now, since my daughter is a school teacher, and thru Feb 22nd the U.S. Flu death total is estimated to be at least 18,000 and has been increasing the last 3 weeks at a rate of 2,000 a week with at least 310,000 hospitalizations so far this Flu season. 2. This Flu season has been running in U.S. longer than the world believes the Corona virus has been infecting people. 3. China and the U.S. are similar sized countries; but China has 4 times the population density of the U.S, probably enabling an initial more rapid spread of any new virus.. 4. If I recall correctly, the CDC believes this years Flu vaccine in the U.S. has been about 55% effective. a. Having an existing Flu vaccine and available Flu antiviral medicines compared to the Corona Virus which has neither, would seem to make any disease spreading and mortality rate comparisons an Apple vs. Oranges situation. b. For example, if person A took the Flu vaccine in the fall in the U.S. and avoided getting the Flu, he/she certainly would not die from the Flu, and he/she also spared everyone he/she were in contact with for the last few months from being exposed to the Flu from he/she. c. The intermingling of those 2 vaccine related situations and their multipllied effect on our population disease data would seem to make a direct comparison virtually impossible. 3. And I believe our average population is taller.than those in China...probably due to stronger gravity over China than over the U.S. thereby allowing our longer lungs a higher survival rate from these type viruses due to less gravity pressure on the virus fluid build ups in our lungs.... Note, point 3 above is supposed to be humor. Ed S. PS. If the Corona virus dies out in warm weather like many expect that, should help lessen the impact in the U.S this year, but I really believe there is a chance that next year the Corona Virus could have a much longer and more dangerous impact both here and worldwide, hopefully I'll be wrong about that. |

3/2/2020 2:49:36 AM the real issue in this country is somebody is lieing. you have fox and cnn. you have right and left. most issues have directly opposite points of view. both can't be right. the mueller report, the impeachment, wpo stating trump has lied 15,000 times, and on and on. to micronize this we have two new right wing talk show hosts here in pgh , clearly this radio station is weaponizing for the election. western pa will be important in the election. what do these hosts owe their audience? if found to be lieing should they be removed from the air? should influencers like limbau , Hannity , etc be held to the truth ? should our congressmen and president be liable to the truth? |

3/8/2020 4:40:28 PM I really expect more from people than "coronavirus is all hype" nonsense. I've also grown tired of the false equivalency narrative, where "both parties are equally bad." A simple logic test would tell you this can't be true (see what I did there?). Covid-19 concerns epidemiologists for several reasons that ignorant lay people fail or refuse to grasp (because they're not epidemiologists and because they've accepted a process by which they place more trust in ignorant politicians than in actual science). 1. Its transmission includes non-symptomatic windows, complicating quarantine and exposure risk. 2. Its mode of mutation is not well understood and there are already 2 major strains. 3. It is a novel virus and there is not enough data around it, which literally means it could develop in ANY way. See 2. 4. It is not just spurious but could be a seasonal problem with hemispheric rotation. You could see it again, faster, and worse -- presuming that this won't itself become faster and worse, which is exactly why epidemiologists are crucial to listen to and not ignorant politicians with agendas. If you're keeping basic stats, you know that the mortality rate is also creeping toward 4x a typical global flu. I don't really think there should be much tolerance for downplaying this or pretending to understand the risks. Don't get information from ignorant political leaders who understand very little in general, but especially global health problems. Mostly, have some agency about your own health -- very little good comes from people are risk your health for expediency. https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html?fbclid=IwAR24IHv1JCSTPPFoCJCsBo4ToyAVyJMAtozvQLdEiE5LGqpevxzjC7nhiy4#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6 |
