The positive attitude does not mean that every idea has to be treated as wonderful. It means a positive exploration of an idea to discover and show up whatever good features it has. The next step might be to find the weaknesses in order to strengthen them, rather than using them as a means for rejecting the idea. Finally the fully developed idea may not be used because there is a better one or because - good though it may be - it is not suitable.

Contribution is much more than just playing by the rules. You may stick to the rules and yet contribute very little.
Contribution is a basis of judgement. Instead of saying "Is he (or she) right or wrong?", we might say "What is his (or her) contribution?". Instead of saying "Is he (or she) good or bad?", we might say: "What is his (or her) contribution?"

Negative criticism is easy because it is always possible to find fault with anything if one looks hard enough. It is quite easy to concentrate on the faults and ignore what is worthwhile. But the main and overriding attraction of criticism is that it at once makes the critic superior to what he is criticizing.

Traditional Western thinking is simply very inappropriate when applied to the design of action. Yet we have never sought to develop any other type of thinking, because we have been so complacent with our thinking habits, derived from the Gang of Three (Socrates, Plato and Aristotle).
It is only in the military and in business that attention has been given to action thinking. It was the Prussian military philosopher Clauswitz who laid the basis for much of the subsequent work. Even so, much of the thinking is still based on the traditional thinking method of classify, identify, and apply routine behaviour.

If, for improvement, we rely on the correction of faults, we can get no improvement if we can perceive no faults. And often we cannot perceive faults unless we can already perceive the possibility of something better. The Japanese search for quality in manufacturing is unending (once they were turned on to this game) because, no matter how good something is, there is always the possibility of doing it better. But the Western habit of critical thinking means that first we must find faults and then seek to put them right, so anything without faults is impossible to improve.
So we can see that critical thinking as a major element of our thinking tradition has quite severe limitations and even when it is working well must in the end depend on perceptions which we prefer to treat as absolutes.

Mistakes arise directly from the way the mind handles information; not through stupidity or carelessness.
The same processes that make the mind so effective a thinking device are also responsible for the mistakes.
The monorail mistake simply involves going directly from one idea to another in an inevitable manner and ignoring all qualifying factors.
Measurement is a tool we have created deliberately to cope with the magnitude mistake.
The misfit mistake is very easy to make because the mind cannot really notice all there is to be noticed.
The must-be mistake is a mistake in the future rather than in the present or in the past.
The must-be mistake can be recognized when one compares the idea as it is to the way it could develop were it not prevented by arrogance from changing at all.
An arrogance-clamp stops the normal evolutionary process by which ideas can get better and better.
The miss-out mistake arises when a conclusion that is based on only part of the situation is applied to the whole situation.

Avery,
I know you like de Bono and he is a clever guy. But this is not a De Bono forum. Posting closer to trading/SF/Money management/stock selection etc. will do the group a better servicer, at least here. I'd much rather hear what you have to say about these topics. If someone is a fan of DeBono, one can get his books.
